Honestly, everywhere I go as a tourist, the only thing I want to do is eat. Then again, I can’t be eating at all hours, so in Los Angeles, California, here are my favorite things to do in between my many, many (have I mentioned many?) meals.
Downtown LA isn’t as lively as say New York or Chicago, but it’s getting there. Walking around is fun as you get to enjoy the classic buildings, including the legendary Biltmore Hotel, where they used to host the Oscars, The Broad, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Pershing Square, the building where they shot “Bladerunner” and my personal favorite, the blue building where they shot a scene in “Se7en.”
No matter how old I get, and I am getting quite up there, I still love a day at the Zoo. The Los Angeles Zoo, while not as famous as its San Diego counterpart, is a nice hike and features a ton of beautiful and happy animals. My favorites would have to be the giant otters who are very active and playful and the lion who was just chillin’ like male lions are wont to do. Adult tickets are at 20 USD.
3. LACMA
I am definitely not an expert on museums, but the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is a fun way to spend a day or afternoon. There are a lot of interesting features that come in and out, depending on the season. When I visited (March 2016), the Rain Room and the Breathing Lights were the highlights. My personal favorite was this huge installation of Metropolis II, complete with highways and toy cars that run only on magnets. Take a picture by the Urban Lights installation too. Make sure to get tickets for the most interesting features as soon as you hit the entrance or you might not get a spot. LACMA adult tickets are at USD 15.
2. Catch a movie at ARCLight
Hollywood is in Los Angeles, so it would be nice to catch a movie too. Try to catch one at ARCLight CInemas where there is reserved seating, and late comers are turned away so your movie experience is undisturbed. Some of the movies you catch there will have small, behind the scenes features and interviews after the credits so stick around! Also, they have quite possibly the best popcorn (with melted butter!) in all of the world. Ask the attendant to layer the butter. You will thank me, I promise. Movie tickets are around USD 17. Popcorn prices don’t matter. They are that good.
1. Tickle the funny bone at UCB
The Upright Citizens’ Brigade not only holds improv classes for aspiring actors, they also do weekly and nightly shows. One of the more popular shows would be Sh**ty Jobs but with the quality of improv comedians on hand, any show will be a great evening out. On any random day you could catch one of the more famous UCB alums, some of whom have starred in commercials or even Hollywood films. All UCB shows are USD 10 or less but sell out really quickly.
