Making an actual “Char Siu" (Chinese BBQ Pork) or “Asado” in Filipino, can be daunting. Here’s a non-authentic, easier but very yummy alternative. I use pork tenderloin but a loin may be used if it is more affordable. Chicken is a great alternative too.

Ingredients (serves 4-6)

1 kg pork tenderloin
2 tbsps hoisin sauce (for marinade)
2 tbsps shaosing wine
1 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsps oyster sauce
1 tbsp sesame oil
¼ cup hoisin sauce for dip
1/8 cup apple juice
1 tbsp honey
6 pcs mantou bread, steamed (optional)
salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. In a non reactive container, marinate the pork with the hoisin, wine, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil overnight.
  2. Sear the pork tenderloin on a griller about 11/2 minutes on each side.
  3. Finish the pork tenderloin in a 200 degree C oven for 8-10 minutes or until cooked.
  4. In a small pot, mix together apple juice, hoisin sauce, and honey. Reduce for 2 minutes.
  5. Slice the mantou bread into halves and grill quickly, about two minutes on each side.
  6. Slice the pork into thin slices and serve with the sauce and the grilled bread on the side.
